The
Motorhead logo is so entrenched into the rock n’ roll landscape that
it hardly seems like an actual human still paints it, ya know?
But one
does, and he’s a badass biker uncle type by name of Joe Pentango.
Joe lives in Denmark, but was born in Portland, Maine, and he’s been ‘the
Motorhead dude’ since, well, since anybody needed a Motorhead dude. He’s
says it’s a boar’s skull, by the way, and he oughta know. A generous
gallery of Joe’s Motorhead covers are reproduced here in all their
vibrant, kinetic glory, as well as various other heavy metal album and
magazine covers. Most of ‘em have skulls, fire, tusks, or angry teeth. A
few of them have all at once. They’re all, as the title would suggest, as
METAL as all unholy fuck.
Aside from a short foreward from Lemmy hisself, and an equally brief (but
informative) intro by Steffan Chiraza, there is little in the way of
editorial in this finely produced coffetable book. Just lots of glossy
black pages, splashed with deep reds and shiny silver chrome. Much like
the music it represents, the art here is touch, macho, and loud. Which is
exactly how it ought to be, so right on.
If yer lookin’ for a bitchin’ design to airbrush onto the side of your
van, then just pick a page, baby. Any page.
