I’ve never been too close with the man upstairs or admired his work in any way, but I’m always first to applaud when he casts out the sinners – the angelic unchosen, if you will – and leaves them to make their way in this veritable hell on earth. Especially when the unchosen are gorgeous evil teen cherubs, who, when left to their own devices, cover their skin in tattoos and then expose it for all to taste. Well, Joanna Angel is the electric demigoddess herself, the Brooklyn bad girl, the high priestess of delicious sin, and a good acquaintance of mine (all the sexy evil are, don’t ya know). She’s also the leader of the Burning Angels army and has erected BurningAngel.com, a temple where the rest us mortals can worship her naked friends, watch XXX videos, and read band interviews, erotic fiction, and social commentary. Now, you never really need an excuse to talk to someone as beautiful as Joanna, but the launching of a new BurningAngel.com site and the release of the first BurningAngel.com DVD seems like a good reason to catch up. Did you just wake up one day and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to start a porn site’? No. My roommate in college, Mitch, him and his friend Chummy (BurningAngel.com’s co-creators) really wanted to start a porn site. They were like, ‘Can you help us?’ because I was an English major and I was always writing these weird stories and stuff, so I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll help you guys. It sounds like fun.’ They were like, ‘You could have editorials on there and write advice columns.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, and we should do band interviews.’ And it just started snowballing and then a few months later we actually started putting the ideas into effect. So it was just an idea between some friends that started as nothing and sort of became something. But you do more than just write for the site. How did you get into modeling? I don’t think Mitch and Chummy think of me as a girl. I mean, they do now, but at the time they didn’t. When we were trying to get girls to model, we found it was really, really hard to get girls to model for a web site that didn’t exist run by three kids. We didn’t know what we were doing; we didn’t really have a place to shoot anyone or the means to do much of anything. They didn’t think we were serious. And we didn’t think we were serious, to be honest. So before we really shot anyone else I said, ‘Guys, why don’t we try using me.’
So you had no qualms with getting nude? Not really. I mean, I really did it as a way for us to practice taking pictures for the web site. When we were taking them I didn’t even think about putting them on the Internet. Then after we took them I was like, ‘I guess we should use them.’ Was it easy or difficult for you to pose nude for your friends? I have nothing to compare it to. I don’t know what it’s like to just show up somewhere and model for a porn site and people that you don’t really know. I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all.
	You’re a stripper too, so do you feel any different taking your clothes off for a bunch of strangers? It’s a totally different thing. I like it, but it’s not like BurningAngel.com. To me, I wasn’t even modeling for BurningAngel.com, I was just helping them do trials, and use the camera, discover different angels, you know. Stripping is like a job. It’s totally different. It’s not my career; it’s just a way to get money. You have just revamped the entire site. Business is going well, I assume. It’s going somewhere (laughs). I think we’re going in the right direction. We’ve made a lot of wrong decisions. Like I said, we were a bunch of kids that started a business together that didn’t know anything about business, so it took us about a year and a half of fixing things before we sat down and were like, ‘Alright, if we’re going to do this, we should start doing things right.’ That’s why we started the development of BurningAngel.com 2.0. Last time I talked to you, you said you always wanted to do videos for the site and you’ve finally got into that. We’ve always wanted to do videos, but we didn’t have any money to buy a camera. Once we got a camera we started making videos.
Plus, we had to be a little more established before we started doing videos. First we had to master the art of taking pictures. So we needed a little more experience. So how do you like directing? I like it. It’s awesome.
Do you use it as a way to get people to act out your fantasies? Umm, no. The goal is to get people to fuck in positions you can catch on camera. A porno is a movie. If you’re making a movie you need to have something in your head that is what you want people to see when they’re watching it. It just so happens that the movie is about fucking. That would be kind of disgusting if two people showed up and I made them act out my fantasies. That’s just weird. I’m not doing BurningAngel.com to fulfill my personal desires. I’m doing BurningAngel.com because I think it’s a good idea and I think other people think it’s a good idea.
What makes your site different from some of the other sites out there, like SuicideGirls.com or Lollipop.com or others? There are a lot of reasons why we’re different. I could go on about that forever. SuicideGirls.com is a business-centered site. The owner of SuicideGirls.com saw that people with tattoos are a huge market and cashed in on it. That’s definitely not what we did. We just kind of made this web site to represent our own likes – we like sex, we like tattoos, we like music. We like BurningAngel.com. This is who we are. Our personality is all over the web site. Suicidegirls.com is a very smart and well-researched web site of what sells and what doesn’t sell and they put what sells on their web site. I mean, every web site with really good message boards and interactive features does well – MySpace.com does well, Friendster.com does well, Nerve.com does well – they all do well. It’s not a risk. We’re not like HotTopics.com. We’re not like the Backstreet Boys. We’re not generically engineered. This is just who we are.
	So it all goes back to three kids just having fun. And we want to have fun for the rest of our lives so we want to do it right. Do you see yourself doing this for the rest of your life? I see myself doing it for as long as I can. I don’t really have any other future plans. There are other things I’d like to do on the side, but I’d say we have at least another 10 years. A new feature on the new BurningAngel.com is a bio page for every girl. Yours stated that if anyone could guess the where the quotes on your tattoos come from you’ll give them a prize. They’re Kurt Vonnegut. What’s my prize? So what do want, a kiss? a free password for the site? Maybe I’ll give you an autographed copy of our DVD coming out. You’re making a DVD? What’s that going to be about? What’s it going to be about? What do you think? It’s a hardcore porno with five sex scenes, including an orgy, a threesome, and an anal scene, and five band interviews, which I think is pretty cool.
What bands do you interview? My Chemical Romance, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sick of it All, Killswitch Engage, and 18 Visions. What girls can we expect to see? Me!! And Kylee, Liz, Korbin, Anika, Nancy, and Jezebel. If you had a chance to be in a video with any BurningAngel.com girl, who would it be? Well, I was in the DVD and I actually did not want to do it with a girl. I wanted to do it with a guy. I’m actually not a lesbian at all. I’m really not into girls. There was the time I took the pictures with another girl, but I don’t want to have sex with a girl. It’s too trendy.
Is it a big misconception that most of the girls swing both ways? A lot of the girls do swing both ways, to be honest. All the girls in the five-girl orgy scene were bisexual. Besides BurningAngel.com, what’s the best thing about Brooklyn? The bagels? I really like bagels. I don’t know. We don’t really leave the apartment that much. Who are the best bands in Brooklyn right now? There’s a band called Japanther. They’re one of the better ones. You do a lot of band interviews for the site. Who’s your worst interview experience been with? Did you read my Explosion interview? No I didn’t. I read the one with Slash and that didn’t seem to go very well so that’s why I am asking. Yeah, that was a pretty funny experience. But that wasn’t really bad. It was Slash, you know, what do you expect? I was lucky enough to interview Slash that I didn’t mind the fact that he really wanted me to go away.
Who’s the coolest band you’ve interviewed? Marilyn Manson. He’s amazing. I just think he’s one of the most inspirational people in music right now. Who’s inspiring you in the porn world? I just read an interview with Brittany Andrews and I think she is pretty cool. I have different role models in the porn world for different reasons. My role model of all time is Tristan Taormino. She’s my absolute favorite. She may not be the hottest porn star and she may not have done that many movies but I just really think her outlook on porn is awesome. Like me, she didn’t do porn for the money, she did it because it was something she wanted to experience and something she wanted to write about. And that’s what I do too. I just did this DVD because I really wanted to know what it’s like on the other side of the camera so I can really be there for the girls. I think Crystal Spiegel is really hot, she’s one of the more attractive porn stars. I really like Bella Donna because she can stick more dicks inside of her than anyone else in the world.
	Is there anything you haven’t done yet that you’d like to experience? I did a fucking anal scene to make sure that I did everything. I was like, ‘If I’m going to do a video, I want to make sure it’s a video I do everything in.’ I just wanted to take care of all my curiosities so I just did one video to take care of them. At the end of the day, maybe 10 years from now, are you still going to be doing this? We’ll see what happens. I’m definitely not going to be in videos 10 years from now and there’s not going to be any decent pictures of me 10 years from now. I’m really hoping 10 years from now I can live on a deserted island and read books and not talk to anyone. You can’t run your own business for the rest of your life. At some point you have to sell or pay the right people to do your work for you because you’ll just have a heart attack. Hopefully you’ll find that island. I hope so. Maybe I can buy it.
