Not
exactly hot on the heels of the first Doomed Messiah, which I think
came out in 2004, but what the hell, sludge takes time to congeal just
right. This series covers the sights, sounds, and smells of the stoner
crust/grind/sludge movement, all those way, way beyond doomed
motherfuckers with the dreadlocks and drug problems and piles of Orange
amps. It’s grisly business, and it takes a splatter-minded artist like
Tom Denney to capture it in all it’s ear-pummeling, eye-gouging glory.
Most of these bands are not the most visually arresting characters in rock
n’ roll, so Denney makes up for it with montages, swirly editing,
color-tinting, animation, and other subtle tricks that make for compelling
footage, but never detract from the sonic maelstrom onstage. Highlights
include a career-spanning clip of AC doing “Radio Hit”
that shows Seth Putnam in his many varying stages of fatness, Debris,
Inc. performing a punishing over of St. Vitus doomcult hit “Born
too Late” with Wino himself guesting on vocals, and a cool
hardcore sex cartoon with cat-girls dildoing each other’s assholes.
There’s also less pleasant-on-the-ears clips from bands with awesome names
like Land of Minotaur, Weedeater, Starchild, and
King Fire Goat, among others. A real psycho-head blowout here. It
really makes you wonder what kinda damage this guy could do if he set his
sights on less cult-bound bands. _____________________________________________________
