The title is a little on the redundant
side, seeing as 99% of the time, cannibals are also maniacs. We can pretty
much just make that assumption.
Questionable semantics aside, this is a brief but eventful short, stylishly shot in
rough and tumble, hand-held, spam in a cabin style. It’s about some kid in
the woods who opens an evil box, turns into the creature of the title,
eats a dog, and fights the Joaquin Phoenix-looking kid who plays the local
park ranger, maniac-fu style. There’s some splashings of gore, lotsa
karate chops, an eardrum-shattering soundtrack (with songs by our pals,
Italo-deathsleaze punks the Nerds, and the screamy Macakongs 2099), and
some nifty optical effects. Of course, it looks more like a promo reel for
the talented young production team at Warped Reality then a stand-alone
short, but the dvd is beefed-up substantially with lots of music-related
extras, including live footage and promo clips of the bands in the film,
so what the hell. The whole package reminded me of DIY, shot-on-video
rock-gore mish-mashes of the 80’s, like Charles Pinion’s skate-and-die
epic Twisted Issues, and Hugh Gallagher’s death rock classick Goreotica.
Same anything-goes vibe, same LOUD-ass soundtrack. It’s a fun little jolt,
this one, like a slug of whiskey, or a donkeypunch. If yr a fan of manic,
home-grown, rock n’ roll horror, than you’ll definitely wanna check Warped
Reality out now, before they sell out and make Bride of Cannibal Maniac,
or somethin’. |
