Asgaroth - Red Shift

Goodie, Goodie - more foreign metal from the Sleazegrinder general. This time they're from Spain, and they are damn good, too. Asgaroth are straight up the alley of Cradle of Filth epics. It's almost theatrical in the way it presents itself, with bundles of keyboards, and a variety of vocals to make it all the more tasty. You can just picture what the music video's gotta be like- lots of black/grey color schemes, statues, and goth-y looking vixens doing the "Ms. Black No.1" dance in the corners like harpies, waiting for some poor, unsuspecting fucker to come into their lair and "Whammo!" he doesn't know what hit him. Oh yeah, how can I forget... lots of hair spinning, too. Most of this black metal stuff is so interchangeable, from the album covers to the sounds, that it's something I never went too deep into aside for Venom and a few others; but these guys are definitely one of the better ones. Nice, epic, good production, and played by people who actually care about the stuff they are playing. The tune "Bluntless" has a keyboard part that would sound perfect in a Dario Argento flick (kinda remends me of "Suspiria".) The best is saved for last with the title track, a strange little ditty with lots of lush keyboard work and atmosphere (I'm a sucker for that type of stuff.). What more do you wanna know? Yes, they remind me of COF. There, I said it, you happy now? Ok, don't let the door hit you on your black-sheathed ass on the way out, honey.  - Greg Dellaria
