Whoa Dad! A supremely savage set of basement whompers from this St. Louis trio, so steeped in authentic ’66-style garage stank that you can almost hear their mom’s washing machine chugging in the mix. Lots of retro-minded outfits talk the talk when it comes to evoking the Johnson administration-era caveman boogie of the Back from the Grave and Pebbles comps, but the Serps can clear cash that check here, judging from guitarman Mick Viper’s fuzz-soaked punk riffs and bassist Johnny Venom’s phlegmy yowl. True to form, tunes are evenly divided between hunting for fresh tail (“Gonna Get You”) or telling the last tagged ass to get lost (a respectable cover of the 13th Floor Elevators’ “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” although “I Want You Day” pretty much sums it up), but despite a recording budget that probably wouldn’t buy an eight-piece bucket at KFC, the Serps manage to give their material a wider variety of colors beyond the standard two-chord gutbucket stomp – check out the elephantine slabs of psych hellnoise Viper fires off on “Upholstered Memories.” Solid stuff for a debut disc – makes you wanna round up your most cretinous friends and start a street fight. You know, if your girlfriend/wife would let you, that is.
