The
back cover photo on The Blackouts’ sophomore CD is a grainy, sepia-tonedcandid
showing the band playing in what appears to be the woods in the dead of
night. It’s a little spooky and voyeuristic, and but it’s also kinda boss—I
mean, you’ve gotta be pretty cool to set up your stacks in the middle of the
flipping woods and start playing for, I dunno, the deer—which pretty much
sums up the sound on Living in Blue as well. It fits not too
uncomfortable under the garage rock umbrella, but there’s a hint of gritty
psychedelia there (not the flower power shit, but the trail-heavy speedfreak
kind), especially on “Fire In the Pouring Rain” and the spasmo guitar
break in “I Have Found Mine” and a lot of high lonesome early ‘80s
punk too—check out “No Tomorrow” or the poppier “Next Train” and
you’ll swear you’ve stumbled across some lost Television studio sessions (if
that band had sworn off their art student aspirations). And if that’s not
enough to get you to part with your hard-earned green, you can pop this disc
in your computer and check out the band ripping through three tuff live
numbers. It’s a little gloomy and uncertain, being lost in the deep, dark
woods with The Blackouts, but the music sounds familiar and a bit
comforting, which is something to go on until morning.
