Now that Riff After Riff is out, I’m a bit perplexed to have
The
Wildhearts’ middling 2003 “comeback” disc in my mailbox again. Of course,
it’s
out to help promote their upcoming tour with The Darkness. Must Be
Destroyed has lots of high points—“Nexus Icon” is the damn near perfect
single, and there’s red-blooded glampop on display, like “Only Love” and
“There’s Only One Hell.” But the scale tips too deeply into the sugar bowl a
few
times, especially “One Love, One Life, One Girl.” I guess I can’t fault
Ginger
for wanting to put pen to paper about feeling healthier for the first time
in…well, probably ever. And hey, having CJ on board for a couple of tracks
is a
bonus that most devotees probably thought would never have happened unless
guns
were involved. It’s just that Riff After Riff sounds like the
Wildhearts
in full cry, whereas Must Be Destroyed is sort of a check-up.
Power-pop
riffs intact? Check. Ginger standing? Check. For many, that’s enough, but
you
can do one better with Riff After Riff.
