The
pride (?) of Sacramento, CA, beer-fueled buccaneers U.S.
Roughnecks are firing a shot loaded with old Fear and Cro-Mags
lps across the bow of the U.S.S. Punk Rock in hopes of sending the
scalawags who are flying the “emo” flag down to Davy Jones’ locker. Good for
them. Their debut for Hellcat is ferocious,
guttural blue collar punk ‘n’ roll that bursts a blood vessel or two over
shit day jobs, cops (their position on the law is neatly summed up in “Serve
And Protect”: “FUCK THE COPS! FUCK THE COPS!”), unity among their
clean-shaven, lager-loving brethren, and the joys of getting tanked to the
gills and knocking in a few heads (all in good fun) on a Saturday night in
Sacramento. Frontman Mikey Hennessey has the leather lung power to
keep these dirty power blues alight, and the band, led by bassist Jay
Bastard (also in label head Lars Frederiksen’s side outfit the
Bastards), serves up the fourteen tracks steaming hot and dripping with
40-weight oil. Sure, it’s about as subtle as a baloney-and-shit sandwich,
but sometimes a kick in the ass will get your point across as clearly as a
well-chosen word.
