Col. Knowledge and the Lickety-Splits
hail from Athens, GA, and as far as I know, do not live in a
psychedelic Day-Glo treehouse and show cartoons to the neighborhood kids
all day long (though if they could, I bet they’d do it in a heartbeat).
They do, however, sling button-bright jangle-pop that sits comfortably
between the charming downtown eccentricities of NRBQ and the more
polished rock of hipsters-with-a-heart-on-their-sleeves like Fountains
of Wayne. There’s plenty of material on Fall in Love All Over Again
to get the girls to kick off their sandals and dance the Pony at your next
backyard barbecue – the Farfisa-driven “Someday There Will Come a Time”
and “I Just Want Somebody (To Get With)", and the countryish twang
behind “Babysitter” are good candidates – and for those flying
solo, “Water In Your Eyes” is a bittersweet summer bummer tune that
compares favorably to Big Star. There just aren’t enough bands that
sound perfect while the sun slowly sets into a pool of reds and oranges
and the scents of sizzling burgers and Coppertone curl lazily around your
nostrils, so it’s good to know that the Col. and Co. have answered the
nation’s call.
