JUKEBOX ZEROS
|
There
seems to be an abundance of bands ripping off late 70’s NYC punk, and the
Jukebox Zeros are on that list. Fortunately, they do it pretty well.
The CD looks good with a great looking j-card and a simple but effective disc design. There’s something to be said for sticking to a single color background with your logo featured prominently. When I look at a CD I want to know who it is, which disc, and that’s it. These guys got it right. The music is clearly influenced by Johnny Thunders, Wayne County, and every other trash rock band that’s so trendy right now, but the Zeros save themselves with original intros, decent hooks, and solid vocals. The vocals somewhat of a Mick Jagger ripoff, but they are done well, and in tune. Gotta give these guys credit for great song titles. They made me actually want to hear the songs. I mean, “Cigarettes and Sorrow”, “Fun Suck”? Fantastic. The song “Yeah You” stood out and really showcased the Stones influence, while “Hurry up and Wait” was a straight up Chuck Berry tribute. Overall, the recording is good, the mix is good, the songs are good. I’m not jumping up and down with enthusiasm, but I’m not using the disc as a Frisbee either. I’d love to hear these guys use their influences as influences, and not tribute them so blatantly. They have a ton of potential, but are at risk of getting caught up in the torrent of New York Dolls bands that seem to be coming out of the woodwork. The Dolls did the disaster rock thing because they were disasters. This band can clearly play, and should settle into a style that they can own. ________________________________________________________ |
