UK’s
reigning superglam fanzine chick Alison B. offers up yet another
stellar batch of glitterpunk, slut rock, and pixie dust goth bands all
wrapped around saucy soundbites culled from her freewheeling, X-rated
interviews with various platform bootboys. All the bands on the comp have
been featured in the fur-lined pages of Bubblegum
Slut zine at some point, so if you’ve read it, well, this is what
it sounds like. Ok, so there’s a few tracks on here that sound a little, uh…girly,
but hey, a girl put it together, so whaddya expect? Mostly tho, it’s fully
of tough, sleazy rock and roll, and like all great comps, leaves ya hustling
for more material from yr fave bands on deck. Highlights on this ‘un are a
plenty, and most certainly includes the flash metal meltdown of openers
Broken Teeth. Formed by ex-glambangers Dangerous Toys (and
technical thrash metal band Watchtower, if ya wanna stretch things
real far back) mainman Jason McMasters, BT are whiskey
swillin’ bad asses from Texas who sound like a redneck Skid Row, and
they just blaze through opener “Hanging by the Skin”. Personally, I
didn’t think anybody past a Van Zant bro in the mid-70’s could pull
off a line like “Oh lordy what have I done/I shoulda listened to dear ‘ol
mom”, but McMasters just tears lines like that up like he was born in
the back seat of Deere tractor, or something. If ya dig the greasy likes of
American Dog and Jackyl, ain’t no reason at all why you
wouldn’t enjoy Broken Teeth just as much. Elsewhere, Canuck T Rex
revivalists Crash Kelly lay down a fantastic glam rock cruncher, “She
Gets Away”, full of purple-powered riffs and a perfect, hook-y chorus,
and UK superboogie champs Freewheeler bash yer brains in with a giant
mallet made outta AC/DC and Rose Tattoo riffs on the monstrous
“Driving Us Crazy”. Then there’s the insanely catchy punk n’ roll
razorblade mania of the Roolettes’ bad luck anthem “Same Old Story”,
the sexy, chick-powered glampop of Anet’s “Talented Girl”,
and…well, let’s just say there’s more where that came from. I could do
without the Dracula stuff, but otherwise, a great comp that turned me on to
a cuppla great new bands. I’d close with a witty remark about how much fun I
had spending another hour with this Bubblegum
Slut, but I’m sure yer way ahead of me. Just pick up the comp
– it’s sloppy and colorful, it rocks, and it’s cheap. Just like…well, you
know.
