A
beautifully designed and executed split EP from aptly named Portuguese label
Sleazey that pairs UK boogie-raunch kingpins Freewheeler with
homegrown stoner-trash doods Brainwashed by Amalia. Freewheeler
kick off the dirt party with the amazing “Whiskey and the Pills”, a
two-chord love song to rampant self-destruction that’s part AC/DC,
part Gary Glitter, and just rocks like crazy. “Man Not a Woman”
is a slinky cock rocker about…well, I think it’s about a girl with a cock.
And why not, really? “Cold Affection” is a surprisingly effective
Southern rock ballad that brings to mind the Four Horsemen, and “We
Love the Drugs”? Well, what do you think, man? Lessee...big ol’ hooks,
crunching riffs, and a stubborn dedication to good-natured depravity. Sleaze
rock doesn’t get much sleazier – or better- than Freewheeler, man.
Portuguese desert rockers Brainwashed by Amalia fuzzblast their way
through 3 epic-length stoner metal tracks filled with loping monstergroove
riffs and extended acid-jams. “Miles Away” takes an almost punk
approach, with a stuttering military drum-beat and some snarly vox, but the
real proof-in-the-pudding with these fellas is found in the 6 minute plus “Caravan”,
a sundazed feast of Fu Manchu groove, Sabbath heaviosity, and
a seriously odd accent (Listen as “Caravan” turns into “Kill a Man” before
yr very ears). I can feel my beard growing shaggier just by listening to
these guys.
Sleazey have got a good thing going with this series of bitchin’
splits. Of course, I highly doubt there’s a truck driver on the planet
that’d listen to either of these bands, cuz most truckers just listen to
maniac right-wing talk shows and old Bobby Goldsboro tapes that they
picked up at gas stations for a buck-fifty, but what the hell. Killer EP
anyway.
