DAG, salacious Psychobilly lords and lynchpins have shaken off some Psycho shackles over the years, though it’s debatable whether they’re actually less psychotic. They do, however, sound more like Motorhead as singer Sparky’s voice becomes deeper as time flies, more-so as he sings anyway like he’s strapped straining into a dentists chair in some madam’s cellar having just seen what she’s picked up. Opener ‘Pedigree Scum’ almost rolls you a fag and puts you in a taxi to town, so sickly reminiscent is it of clubs, a slow building lurch like trawling through the throng. Whereas live DAG are more thrash metal with a double-bass brutality and consequently a more fearsome proposition once unleashed onstage, on record they’re more contained. At times the sound seems shackled in rubber bondage clothes...a beast straining on the leash. However, things are still centred on the sick, twisted and sinister. The title track (‘Grandma liked to fuck me, Grandpa liked to watch’), should surely be the soundtrack to a Deep South set splatter-maniacs delight; the guy from ‘Pervy In The Park’ rears his ugly ‘head’ again on ‘Jogging Machine’ – a tasteful ditty about lacing joggers tea as watching girls fall over is the only thing that turns him on!...‘Someone’s Out To Get Me’ could have graced any Johnny Cash or even Pogues record, and is leader of the pack with ‘Hellbilly Storm’ itself; ‘Block Up’ considerately provides a guide on how to be Demented (‘Cocaine, crack, LSD / Done too much mushroom tea’); ‘Demon Seed’, which could be done for stalking The Sisters of Murky’s ‘Doctor Jeep’, and ‘Hotrod Vampires’ are pure comic book NWOBHM (‘Hotrod Vampires – Demons in the night’, c’mon!) or early Shawn Hutson stories. ‘...Seed’ and ‘Doin’ Me In’ are Supersuckers style squelchy grunge-punk. While being an admirable little departure to what people may expect, they don’t work as well as hardcore Psychobilly rockers like ‘Destruction Boy’. This diversity should see their status safe, whilst the cloying, choking, breathless sound and atmosphere should suck in fresh meat for the slaughter. ________________________________________________________
