THE SCARED STIFFS
Autopsy Turvy
Poptown

You really need a roadmap to accurately access what’s going with this monstrous mob scene, as the NY-based Scared Stiffs mix their original horror punk tunes with half a dozen covers here, some of ‘em suitably gory (Groovy Ghoulies!) and some just flat out rockin’ (The Dictators). Problem is, I can’t tell you the difference between a Dead Elvi song and a Scared Stiffs song, so you just have to take the album as one big, steaming gutpile of fast, catchy, creepy rock n’ roll that’s sometimes home-grown, and sometimes borrowed. Suffice to say, it all weaves together nicely, like Leatherface’s skin mask. As with any modern-day monster rock band, the Scared Stiffs lean heavy on the crooner-choruses and bouncy Ramones riffs, but their singer has a great Alice Cooper growl, and the lyrics, like a good, trashy movie, are dumb-but-funny, so what the hell. Of course, any self-respecting shock n’ roll show has to have a William Castle-ish gimmick, and this one’s no exception. The enhanced “Autopsy Turvy” (clever!) takes over your PC and rolls out a fun Claymation video about mummy love for the catchy “Zombified” before the main event. I liked it, it had dancing skeletons and everything. Dunno if the Stiffs are gonna be you new fave undead rockers ever, but this oughta keep you in stitches ‘til Halloween, at least. _______________________________________________________
