Easily the most famous ex-Skinyard
member, grunge super-producer Jack Endino steps to up the business end of
the rock n’ roll cannon once again for a smoky blast of good ol’ Seattle
bad-time downer boogie. Endino plays guitar and sings, and he’s helped out
by a former Skinyard band-mate (drummer Barrett Martin), the bass player
from Coffin Break (Rob Skinner), and a cuppla Accused dudes. So, heavy
company. Heavy rock, too, in classic pre-feeding frenzy Seattle style. Lotsa low-end, lotsa psychedelic art-metal meets
Stooges punk, lotsa
angst. “PFE” also includes lotsa doper philosophy like “Don’tcha know that eye
for an eye means you’re going blind?”, breezily slurred by the very
Shannon Hoon-esque voice of Endino over a free-wheeling acid-rock guitar
that sounds sorta like Helios Creed tripping on old Coliseum II records.
The plaintive, scratchy “Only Way for Me” is a stand-out, tough and tender
in equal measure, like Dino JR playing in the sound garden, but it’s a pretty
eclectic mix of space-y grog n’ roll here, so spin the wheel, bet on
“Arab-esque grunge surf-pop”, and eventually, it’ll land on a groove in
here somewhere. It’s a little on the arty side if yer a wooly ‘eadbanger,
but adventurous ears oughta dig it. _______________________________________________________
