The word around the fire hydrant is that Wattatata, the second album
from Seattle punk miscreants DEK, is a “serious” record, and by serious,
this apparently means that they’re no longer singing about Captain Pickle
or gorillas on the loose. Well, that’s pretty much true – DEK sings about
political matters now, like on the standout track “Do You Feel a Draft?”
The good thing is that the shift doesn’t sound forced – Bret Chernoff’s
matured voice has a raspy gravity that helps sell the material, and the
band’s sound is harder, more direct and less loosey-goose than on Boner.
But none of this means that DEK’s music is any less fun – you can still
tear up your bedroom or burn down your school to their teeth-rattling,
Orange County-circa ’84 punk blitz. But after listening to Wattatata,
their audience of teen freaks and suburban headcases might think about
unleashing some of that pent-up energy on bigger and more oppressive
targets. Let the youthquake begin.
Oh, one more thing – the band also sent along preview discs for The
Wacky World of DEK, a DVD compilation of short movie/videos featuring the
boys romping good-naturedly with some girls and a gorilla along to tunes
from Boner. It’s dopey but fun, especially the freakout fiesta “LSD:
Trip or Trap?” and pleasantly evokes the sunshiney goofball vibe of ‘60s
Scopitones and Ray Dennis Steckler’s Rat Pfink a Boo Boo (no surprise
there, as DEK is managed by Mike Vraney, the big boss at Something Weird
Video; he’s also guitarist Mark’s dad). For more info on the DVD and when DEK plans to come to your town and steal your hubcaps, check out
