Flesh For Lulu were always a bit of a mystery. On the surface, their penchant for all things black and smeared eyeliner would easily qualify them as leading lights of the ’80s goth scene. But beneath the dark veneer lurked an uncanny knack for a pop hook, and a reverence for the swagger of the Stones, the bump and grind of T.Rex and even a nod or two to country and blues.

BIG FUN CITY was the band’s second album, and still stands as their most adventurous outing. Like their later material, there are plenty of big hooks, but the album embellishes them in flash-guitar riffs, caustic rhythms and vocal twists that take the pop element to a completely different place. Nick Marsh’s vocals are sinister and melodic on “Vaguely Human” and “Laundromat Cat,” while guitarist Rocco Barker gets his Johnny-Thunders strut on in high style. This reissue also includes the band’s Blue Sisters Swing EP, plus a booklet featuring a full discography.

In the end, Flesh For Lulu were far too hip for their time, while perpetually trapped in the past, due to their range of influences. But that’s what makes the band so intriguing—their ability to defy easy categorization...and make damn good records, too. Recommended. _______________________________________________________
