We don’t care much for dudes bemoaning their broken relationships on CD
around here (there’s far too much emo slop out there to give it another
forum), but Dennis (Refused/International Noise Conspiracy) Lyxen’s solo
project The Lost Patrol has figured out a way to make heartache not only
listenable but even danceable – well, you know, if you do that sort of
thing. Lyxen has clearly been kicked to the curb by some wicked lady, but
instead of getting all introspective and screamey about it, he dug into
his Cheap Trick and Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe LPs and poured out his
bruised heart into ‘80s power-pop. The result is ear-pleasing,
ass-shaking rock that explores confusion, disillusionment, and loneliness
between the guitar hooks and vocal harmonies – pretty much the definition
of bittersweet, and sometimes, you gotta work that flavor into your
musical menu to improve your palate. And if that’s not enough, it sounds a
hell of a lot better than those old phone messages from her that you’ve
been listening to over and over again, and definitely won’t do anywhere
near the damage to your system that a long weekend of draining your liquor
cabinet will do.
