Satan’s Pilgrims
Plymouth Rock: The Best Of...

Yep. Two disc’s worth of Portland’s surfiest b-movie surfers. Now listen, I am not gonna try and convince you that I can tell the fuckin’ difference between one surf tune and another, because I cannot. What I will try to convince you of is that Satan's Pilgrims' reputation as one of the greatest surf/instro rock bands ever – along with the space-stricken Man or Astroman?, head honcho Dick Dale, and the Mummies, when they were in the mood – is well-deserved, and not just because they had matching capes. Well, a little because of the capes, but mostly because every one of these fuzzy little epics brings to mind all the things that make this kinda stuff great – bikinis and bug-eyed monsters and that Von Zipper fucker. The first disc is that actual “Best Of”, collecting their most well-known and well-loved tracks from their five (and running) albums. Like I said, beats me what’s what, but on sheer title preference, I guess I’ll mention opener “Vampiro”, “Grave-Up” (hah!) and “Boss USA” as highlights. The second, “Bonus” disc has rarities and b-sides and even four new tracks, which sound remarkable similar to the old tracks. Mostly.  Some of ‘em actually sound more like roller derby rave-ups then surf rockers. Oh, and there’s a bonus video clip too, but since I am in my car at the moment, I cannot say whether they are wearing capes or not. Oh, and the whole thing is wrapped up in a beautiful red n’ black package, with copious liner notes. Listen, if you like surf music, this is like…fuckin’ Cowabunga, dig? __________________________________________________
