Back
in the mid-90's when they first got cooking, Chicago's Acumen Nation
were just plain ol' Acumen, until some jug band from Alabama (or
something like that) threatened to sue 'em outta their ripped fishnets, so
they added the Nation, and now everybody's happy. AN were part of
the original 'coldwave' movement, plying their serial killer death disco
alongside like-minded cybervllians like Chem Lab, Sister Machine
Gun, Ministry, and Martyr Colony. They were even on Chem
Lab's label, Fifth Column, for awhile back there, but I don't think
they like to talk about it anymore. At any rate, this comp remixes 14 of
their klassic kutz, ranging from 1995's spookadelic robot-raver "Gun
Lover" to last week's "The Wreck of Us", an all-new rivethead
floor shaker. Acumen's music has always been about the perfect edit, so a
remix album makes a stunning amount of sense; it's like a greatest hits
record, only updated and supersized. Me, I'm into the harder, sleazier,
guitar-driven tracks, like the awesome "Pretty Like a Porn Star",
and the neck-snapping "Fuck Face", but just plunk the laser down
anywhere and suddenly the room will be awash in a sickly green glow and
fleshy girls in leather and bruise-colored lipstick will dry-hump you. Try
it, it's fuckin' excellent.
