THE DEAD THINGS
Who Killed Holly Wood?
Dead Things

Just looking at the Deadthings CD, I pretty much already know what I’m in for.  The hot pink typeface, the dead goth girl in a coffin, and most of all the title “Who Killed Holly Would”, scream sleaze glam ala Sunset Strip 1992.  Open it up, and you get classic hair metal  shots of the band complete with a full fuchsia Lip Service suit, skull and crossbones police hat, cowboy hat and trenchcoat, aviator shades and bandana, and of course, the token drummer in corpse paint.  Reading through the liner notes confirms my suspicions as the band thanks such classic Strip bands as Ana Black and the Zeros.  Hammering home my already preconceived notions is the questionable cover of Poison’s “Look What the Cat Dragged In”.  Well enough of judging a band by it’s cover….

The first song starts out with a very cliché clip from some old horror movie…don’t ask me what, and then slams into some surprisingly badass guitar wails.  I’m reminded of Dangerous Toys, which is certainly not the worst thing in the world, and while there’s nothing groundbreaking here, I’m actually not horrified.  In fact, I’m finding myself really liking it.  That is, until the ridiculously bubblegum power ballad “Cemetery Mary”  but what’s a hair metal album without one?

The Deadthings wear their influences on their sleeves, but they seem to be OK with hitting absolutely every sleaze glam cliché on the books.  While the image is a bit hard to take at times, the tunes are mostly solid and well produced.  Unfortunately the drums are a bit flat, but otherwise the sound is solid with the vocals sitting perfectly in the mix.  The Deadthings are ultimately satisfying, and while absolutely unoriginal, will probably get dumped into my ipod for future rocking. ________________________________________________________
