Mascara abusers Paradice return with a full-length assault of
80’s-fried melodic metal. Although everything about ‘em suggests pure
Hollywood-styled sleaze, the Paradice sound is actually kinda classy,
like…well, like Dio, only with girl vox. Let’s say Black Lace,
then. Lead lungs Magdalena has a blues-y, throaty wail to her voice,
and she appears to have lifted her accent from Lita ford (“Fiy-ah!”),
which is pretty cool. Were this the era when such attributes made millions,
I reckon this record’d be pressed on a bitchin’ shaped picture disc, and
you’d be reading this on glassy paper, with lotsa distracting pix. Since
it’s not, well, Paradice find themselves a band outta time, but what
the hell- they sure as fuck play it like they mean it, and if there’s any
doubt as to their commitment to rock, I refer you to their closing tracks- “Rock
and Roll” ( “Need it all/Gonna give it all/Die Young/It’s rock n’ roll”)
and “We Want Rock” (We want rock/We want rock n’ roll/All through the
night/We want rock!”). And fuck, if that doesn’t convince you, there’s a
Quicktime video on here of the band rippin’ through Skid Row’s “Youth
Gone Wild” in front of what looks like several skin mags’ worth of hot
Swedish chicks. Although I really could use a little more cock in
Paradice’s rock, I can’t fault ‘em for living the dream, man. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ |
