THE HYPSTERZ
|
At first glancing listen I was kinda figuring this as being a pointless
exercise. I mean, it's one thing getting a record to review, doesn't cost
a penny, but it's harder to recommend you split the wad and choose this
over the other records you've been needing to get all these past months,
when it's a hardy set of garage and 'Nuggets' covers in the main. That's
not to say it's worthless and shit-shoveling in the sin bin as it's an
enjoyable run through a jungle with classics littering the tree line, a
rampant 'Let's Talk About Girls', a frenzied 'Hey Joe' which resembles
Priests Glenn Tipton in a shizoid paranoid delusion between The Leaves and
Jimi Hendrix's versions, a sharp, sudden 'Slow Death' and a larcenous
'Little Girl', which being one of the greatest songs of all time they
gladly can't go far wrong with, tho they lack the insidious sardonic
sewage spitting coldness of Stivney's Dead Boys uncontrollable assault.
Usual suspects mingle at the canape tray keeping the company of a few
dipped toes in slightly stiller waters, with 'Remember (Walking In The
Sand)' and 'In The Midnight Hour'.I was gonna make a watertight case for the defense of this release on the grounds that the Stones used to cover old hits but they were introducing those songs to people, whereas The Hypstrz are a sort of early tribute band and could just as well be playing the more mainstream end of 60's classic covers in Midwestern bars and bar mitzvahs. Unfortunately, cos it's by no means a turkey turd, in fact I like it,
but one really for garage / Nuggets nuts, who wanna compare versions or
add a version of 'Hey Joe' to the probable 3CD box-set that could be put
out from covers of that song. |
