WOLFMOTHER

I received like, seven copies of this EP in the mail over the past month. Obviously, somebody wants me to listen to it. But who? God? Satan? Wolfmother? Naw, just the ceaseless PR demons who are intent on creating an Aussie retro-rawk phenomenon out of our young power-trio here. Madre Lobo definitely have the potential for that, seeing as they manage to haul all the grandiose heaviosity of early Sabbath and Purple and psyche-tinged fuzzjams of Iron Butterfly and Steppenwolf into the digital age, shining all that dirty ol’ chrome up with their slick rock star tricks and delivering four dizzy dollops of very modern sounding retro-rock here. That’s kinda weird, when you think about it, but that’s what Wolfmother are, weird. Like the Strokes drunk on Cream. Like the White Stripes worrying the hell outta Bloodrock. They’re also young and have cool frizzy hair and they write drug-friendly bellbottom jams that probably sound awesome whenever there’s a fog machine around. Insta-dopers like the fuzz-faced “Dimension” and the space-y “Mind’s Eye” sounded a little forced to my ears, but I’m not the one they’re after with this pre full-length taster, anyway. Wolfmother are the first band to bridge the indie-rock/stoner rock gap, so this is all about the kids, really. Both camps wear fuckin’ corduroys, so they might as well start listening to the same bands, right? ________________________________________________________
