Austin
pedal steel n’ bullhorn pushing cowpokes Chili Cold Blood cough up
a dozen dusty shitkickers here that run the gamut from Beasts of Bourbon
style dirt-country scuzz to muddy electric blooze. Toss some reckless,
Cramps-y raunchabilly in the mix, and you’ve got ‘em. Their song titles
tell you all you need to know, really: “Skanky”, “I’ve
Been Drinkin’”, “Midnight Creep”. The vintage,
lo-watt production makes it all seem unreal, like a Saturday night fever
dream in the dark recesses of that Eraserhead dude’s mind, or something.
You half-expect a skeleton in a straw hat to show up for a trombone solo,
or for bats to fly in through your bedroom window to warn you of a
tornado. It’s some seriously snaky shit, man, and one of the most
true-blue American records I’ve heard in ages. Ironically, it’s on an
Italian label.
