Power
pop, with its girl-crazy lyrics and goofball skinny-tie aesthetic, doesn’t
seem like the kind of music that ever invites tragedy. Sadly, that’s not
always the case. The Returnables’ herky-jerky guitar player John
Glick was killed in a car crash in the summer of 2004, along with
members of the Dials and Silkworm. So that sucks. This 7 song EP is a
benefit CD, with all proceeds going to the John Glick memorial fund. It’s
got the last four studio cuts from these Chicago-based pogo poppers, plus
three live tracks, one being a Wedding Present cover. Like I know who the
Wedding Present were, right? All of it’s retro-fitted and fun, trashy and
new-wavey, and will remind you of video arcades and Material Issue, if
you’re old enough for either of those things. Umm, this is usually the
part of the review where I’d toss in a barb or two, but now I’m kinda
bummed out about the whole thing. That’s what I get for actually reading
the press releases. Anyway, if you dig powerpop or late 70’s garage rock,
check these cats out. And buy your own copy, man. It’s a benefit.
