The Barbarellatones are a Hawaii-based glitter rock band led by ex-Sex
With Lurch mainnman Robbie Quine. Ol’ Rob likes to wear lady-things (or
no-things, if the mood hits ‘em), and his tranny-star looks are the
perfect compliment to the sunny goofball glam you’ll find here. “Cold
Sore” has songs about killer waves, lost cats, junkie girlfriends, and
Chinese food, all played with way more conviction than you’d expect. I’ve
never such a heart-tugging ode to Moo Moo Gai Pan, I tell you that much.
For all his eccentricities, Rob Quine really is a stellar glam rock
songwriter, and there’s plenty of evidence on this atrociously named
album. Rob’s Bolan-boogie-meets-Dick Dale guitar and Bowie-esque vox give
the songs a gloriously dimestore retro feel, not unlike Redd Kross back
when they channeling Yoko One for inspiration, or Enuff Znuff without the
flash metal trappings. Toss in a liberal amount of tambourine and lots of
hippy-hippy shake, and you have successfully landed on whatever strange
planet this is. Hope you brought your thigh-high space boots. ________________________________________________________
