Bad Acid Trip
Lynch The Weirdo
Serjical Strike

S’funny, man, how when this nu-breed of major labeled go-getters manage to wrangle a vanity imprint outta their keepers, they ALWAYS sign and/or produce bands that sound just like theirs (See M. Manson/Godhead and F. Durst/Cold for two of many). I kinda figured that when weird-beard Serj Tankian, pseudo-political warbler for oddball stutter-thrash nu-metal sensations System of a Down had his chance, he might stretch the boundaries a bit, being known, as he is, as an ‘outside the box’ kinda fella. But nope. No matter how much ya might wanna seek inspiration elsewhere, Bad Acid Trip sound like Slipknot “doing” the Butthole Surfers, a description which, on a good day, you could also prescribe to SOAD. “Lynch the Weirdo” has LOTS of on-a-dime time-changes, grindcore blasts, thrash metal riffs, hardcore yelping, “mosh” breakdowns, and loopy jazz-instros suturing the whole mess together. Also, much like System, BAT is absolutely in love with it’s own ‘irreverence’, as twisted-on-purpose carnival rockers like “Strange Humans”, “When you go Madd” and “Join the Circus” ably demonstrate. Umm, I really don’t have any problems with BAT whipping up dizzy, hallucination-metal ditties about digging up dead girls or eating people ALA Soilent Green, it’s just that, if they wanted to be REALLY different, then they shouldn’t try and sound so much like all the other bands people loved to tag as ‘different’, like Mr Bungle and Primus and Zappa and their own boss. Ya know? I will say that their guitarist, Keith, dredges up some bitchin’ vintage punk tones here and there- shades of Flipper and DI and the Germs, only with million $$ production, and hell, for a nu-metal rekkid, that’s different, but it ain’t a fuckin’ acid trip, baby. Ultimately, while “Lynch the Weirdo” is no worse (or better) than an old Infectious Grooves record, it just goes to show that in these days of shamefully homogenized culture, what’s considered “strange” and “out there” to the legions of baseball cap wearers is a fuck of a lot different than it was when I was a pup. Tankian taking on SPK or Psychic TV- now, THAT’d be somethin’ ‘different’.
