Local
rock n’ roll heroes back home (St Louis), the oddly named
Phonocaptors are quite likely gonna just plain rock n roll heroes soon,
like, no matter where they go. Japan, New Jersey, Helsinki, Baghdad,
wherever. All the songs on “Call It” are chewy superhits, in the 70’s
AM radio sense of the term, which, after all, is the BEST sense of
the term. What do they sound like? I’d say they bop around in the plastic
fantastic neverland ‘twixt the Kinks, Dino JR, and the
Flaming Lips. It’s powerpop, it’s loose, sloppy, rock n’ roll, it’s
sugar-powered, yet Saturday night enuff for fightin’, it’s beer commercial
music, if beer commercial music really kicked ass, dig? Basically, if ya dig
rock ya can sing along to, and drink to, and maybe fall in love to, if yer
lucky, or just die instead, if yr not, then this is the stuff, right here.
The fact that they play like they know that they’re the best band in town
kinda bugs me, but not really. I dunno if “Phonocaptors” is gonna
look all that good on a t-shirt, but I bet you’ll be seein’ lots of ‘em soon
anyway.
