Two
by-the-book stoner rock bands from…Sweden, let’s say, team up for a
full-length slab of warm n’ fuzzy rock n’ roll. First up is Asteroid,
the hippies of the pair. They have an almost Bolan-esque sense of
whimsy, but they mostly bury it under the ripsaw distortion of the Blue
Cheer-y guitar, preferring to simply toss out grumpy alligator riffs and
chase ‘em down with tales of life in orbit. For all the blastronaut
allusions, the space race doesn’t really begin until the 5th
track, “Walk Alone”, which is suitably far-out. The real
treat is their closer, “The Big Trip Beyond”, which sounds
like an out-take from Jesus Christ Superstar, on the day when the cast
mistakenly took the brown acid.
So, that’s Asteroid. They may make your third eye flutter a little in
places, but probably won’t blow your brains out. But maybe you don’t need
that on a Wednesday morning anyway.
Blowback is no less derivative- all these ‘fuzzrock’ bands share
the same dusty bowlful of influences – but they are much heavier and more
contemporary than Asteroid. Slow-burners like “Autumn Leaf”
and the driving “Holy Skies” bring to mind stoner metal
brawlers like Generous Maria and sHeavy, and there’s a heavy Zep influence
sneaking in to the closers, “The Arquitect” and “Invisible
Touch”. No, no the Genesis song.
So, that’s the story with this well-paired split. Not bad and sometimes
pretty damned interesting, but ultimately, the song remains the same.
