Maybe I’m wrong, but there seems to be a bit more glide in the stride of Black Lipstick’s second full-length CD, Sincerely. Don’t get me wrong – the Texas quartet is still devoted wholeheartedly to delivering snaky fuck music for melancholy junkies (or those that wish to be identified as such), as evidenced in the benumbed drone behind “Throw Some Money At It” or “” (yeah, that’s the song’s title). But there’s some Television-colored grit present here too, especially on the bass-heavy opener “BOB FOSSE,” and the fuzzy hip-swing of “No Mercy.” I don’t think this signals a sea change for the band – don’t expect to see them yowling freakshow blues like Jon Spencer any time soon – but it’s encouraging to see them want to broaden their pull beyond the night creature brigade by adding a little grit to their heroin-and-handmedowns sound.
