Colorado’s Antidote Records is one of the most consistently interesting
‘horror rock’ labels on the market, so it comes as no surprise that this
compilation, signifying and celebrating their fifth year of existence (or
un-existence, if you wanna keep the ghoul theme going) is such a blast.
It’s also somewhat of a departure, as not all of the bands are horror
punks; some of ‘em ain’t scary at all, just loud, wild and sleazy, like
our good friends Crank County Daredevils and On Parole. There’s punk n’
roll savagery (The Nerds), sexy swank rock (The Unsatisfied), demonic
razor metal (St. Madness), grisly old-skull hardcore (Crybaby Bridge), and
yeah, plenty of the spooky shit, too (Hallowmas, Guthook, Skeleteen).
There’s nothing better than a compilation full of unknown names that turns
you on to a handful of great new bands, and this is one of ‘em, shining
its greasy green light on the squirmy rock n’ roll underground and
discovering a host of hot new horrors. Besides the acoustic creep-out from
Terri Rice and the Honky Punks early on, Under the Radar doesn’t even take
a breather. It’d make the perfect soundtrack for a bloodbath. Good shit,
and wrapped in a great looking, blood-covered CD design.
Oh, and congrats to
Antidote for outlasting the game.
