Jersey Thundercock fiends
Electric Frankenstein are, by very literal
definition, rock n’ roll resurrectionists. They always have been, man.
They’ve also always been ridiculously prolific. They’re a cock rock
scattergun, spreadin’ their filth and fury wherever and whenever possible.
And when they don’t have the time to write their own Dead Boys-slash-AC/DC
hybrid originals, they play covers. Lots of ‘em. Some of them were already
bad ass songs, some of ‘em just became that way when
EF treated them like
the bitches they always were. Previously, these covers- more n’ two dozen of
them- have been scattered throughout the vast money burning wasteland of
record collector Hell, having originally appeared on myriad singles, comp
tracks, flexis, 8 tracks, and backs of cereal boxes. And brother, you ain’t
got the time, bread, or temerity to rustle them all up. Luckily, TKO records
does, and they have, on this deluxe, double-disc sets of Frankencovers. Now,
keep in mind that EF ain’t what you’d call ‘experimental’, dig? They play
sleaze rock, and it really don’t matter who wrote the song they’re singing,
it’s gonna come put sound like sleaze rock. But since sleaze rock is the
reason that we’re both here, I reckon that’s cool with you, right? And dig
this WILD line-up. They do a blistering, tear-yr-eyes-out versh of the
GREATEST ROCK N ROLL SONG IN THE WORLD (it is, man, I checked), “Savage” by
80’s Aussies the Fun Things (Aw, c’mon, you GOTTA know it – “I’m a rock n’
roll Kamikaze!”). I’m pretty sure the Dragons covered it at some point too,
and probably the Black Halos, as well, but EF really, really kick ass with it.
Other highlights on this long but fun collection include dead-on reduxes of “Bad Repuation” by
Joan Jett, “Running with the Boss Sound” by
Gen X, “Aces High” by Maiden (!), “Frankenstein” (natch) by the
Dolls, “High
Voltage” (again, natch!) by AC/DC, etc. Lots of ‘em have punny roots, like
“Over at Frankenstein’s Place” from the Rocky Horror soundtrack, “Don’t
Touch Me, I’m Electric” by Be Bop Deluxe, and “Rock and Roll is Dead” by the Rubinoos, and lots of them were chosen just cuz they’re rockin’ songs, but
however these covers came to be, EF Respect the Rock
throughout. Unless you
are a complete shut-in (with a trust fund), then there’s pretty much no way
you’d have access to all of these songs otherwise, so not only is this an
affordable way to fill the gaps in yr EF collection, it’s like, 90 minutes
or something crazy like that, of high-octane, full-contact cock n’ roll.
Shockingly good stuff, Igor.
