Like
an art project constructed by enthusiastic Satanic teenage dope fiends,
the Black Wing EP is a truly DIY effort that scores big on
charm and whiz-bang inventiveness way before ya even slip it on in. Take a
plain-brown wrapper (in this case, a slipcover digipak), ink it good with
a rubber stamp carved from a home-made sculpture image, tape an actual
black wing on the inside, hand-paint the CD, and
Shazam! Instant collector’s item. It’s about time somebody
figured out how to make digital media actually worth something.
Anyway, that’s what it looks like. Inside, it’s a three-way split betwixt
Glasspack mainman Dirty Johnson’s side-project Dirty Bird,
4 Walls house-band Gravitron, and a sludge-grass (yikes!)
outfit from Kentucky, Birdwing. Dirtybird’s two
greasy tracks are psycho-Frankenstein garage rock freakouts, noisy and
narcotic. Gravitron revamp a cuppla old demo tracks, heavy on the
doom-groove and Southern-acid rawk geetars. Oh, and Birdwing? Well,
they sound like UFO’s crashing into Texan BBQ joints, while Blue Cheer
play funeral dirges in the background. Crazy. There’s only 350 of these on
the planet, so collector scum-types, start your engines! ______________________________________________________ |
