Minnesota shock rock legends
Impaler burst onto the scene in the early
80’s with maws fulla raw meat and fists full of metal, and 20 years later,
they have only gotten heavier (musically and literally), meaner, bloodier,
and crazier as time rolls on. Their signature brand of hacksaw shock n’
roll sutures Motor City ’69 style-mayhem onto 70’s punk and 80’s speed
metal, and covers it head to toe in blood and gore. Righteous. Of course,
back in their early daze, visual evidence was not easy to come by – only
pornographers and rich folks had access to video cameras in 1983 – so,
unless you were actually in town to catch the gruesome display back then,
you weren’t likely to catch Impaler in the, uh, flesh. So, I hope all you
punk fuckin’ kids realize how easy ya got it. I had to wait 20 goddamn
years to see this. Oh, but it was worth it, man.
“20 Years Undead” collects 7 studio-shot video clips of Impaler over the
years – from raw, primitive-as-fuck basement camcorder insanity like
“Vicious Dreams” (1983), which features a skinny, punky young versh of the
band in home-made battle armor, spitting blood and thrashing away like
speed freaks, to more sophisticated multi-camera shoots like the
blistering “Bloodbath” (1986), to freaky Halloween prop-fests like “Undead
Things” (’96) and the outrageous “Meat Wagon” (use yr imagination), from
2000. Course, it’s always alarming to watch a band age before yr every
eyes – and the undead ain’t fine wine, baby, it don’t get PRETTIER as it
goes along – but Impaler’s messy shockadelica is so gleefully
over-the-top, ya can’t help but to love every crazed minute of it.
Also on this comprehensive dvd, a dozen live clips, including a couple
from the band’s 20th reunion in 2003, featuring all the original members,
and a special “bootleg” section, with rare, sometimes grainy-but-always-bitchin’,
Kamikaze-style footage from hometown Halloween shows, Metalfests, and
more. Sure, a lot of it looks kinda like a really noisy snuff flick, but
take it from me, man – that’s just the way rock and roll used to look.
Killer stuff, this DVD. And I mean that literally.
