Judge Jackson is an LA based band of retro-boogie rockers who spice up
their Southern-fried stew with bloozy bar-band shuffles and
stadium-shaking flash metal flourishes. They’re sorta like a less sleazy
Dangerous Toys, or maybe Rock City Angels jammin’ with Jackyl
(minus that
screeching chainsaw motherfucker). Weirdly, JJ also have a serious Beatles
fixation (check out the florid “Matt’s Song”, which had me double-checking
the credits for a Z-Nuff brother), but they manage to stitch the paisley
pop stuff into the redneck crotch-grabbing rawk pretty seamlessly. Songs
like “Amazing”, “King” and “Roll” all have a real ‘classic rock’ vibe to
‘em, and although they slide a little too far into Allman Brothers
territory for my tastes, I can see Judge Jackson really winning them over
at a biker rally. Or a rodeo. Anyplace outside with beer, really.
