MODEY LEMON
The Curious City
Birdman

Third dose of indie-garage rattle n’ jangle from these much celebrated (well, by the Brits, anyway) Steeltown rockers. The Modey Lemon sound is driven by the incessant low-end thump of bassman Jason Kirker, Phil Boyd’s breezy cosmodelic vox, and a vast knowledge of 60’s gold medallion culture. “The Curious City” is a cash-money combo of light-psyche retro-fuzz, sugary pop hooks, and spacey sci-fi Moog, with twisty blasts of fruggable frosted pop and the odd punch of hard rock. I dunno if you remember the Huxton Creepers or the Green Pajamas – I barely remember ‘em myself – but the Modey’s sound a little like those two paisley-powered bands, and a lot like one of those new-fangled Frisco drug-gospel bands plowing through a particularly laid-back episode of the ’66 Batman show, particularly on the pseudo-spooky “In The Cemetery” and the elastic-fantastic “Sleepwalkers”. Elsewhere, they sound like a buzz-band from 1994 trying desperately to sound like a buzzband from 1964, or vice versa. Fun stuff, but so fluffy and lightweight your CD player might float away like a big pink balloon when this one’s on deck. ________________________________________________________
