ST VITUS |
Well, the title pretty much gives it away.
Originally released in 1991, “Live” captures boozy doomrock legends
St Vitus live and raw in 1989, at the height of their considerable powers.
Recorded on a cold November night at Circus Gammelsdorf, Germany, the band
plods through their 70’s fried acid-doom like they invented Sabbath, and
not the other way around. Between songs, you can hear a polite smattering
of applause, but that’s really your only indication that this is a
recording of a motherfucking rock show, because banter is ridiculously
minimal – I think Wino complains about the lack of vocals in his monitor,
and that’s pretty much it, as far as the personal touch goes. But hey,
doom’s never been about razzle dazzle anyway. It’s about snaky riffs,
earthdog chug, and dimestore doper philosophy, and you get plenty of all
three here, as Vitus tears through now-classics “Born Too Late”, “Look
Behind You”, and “White Stallions” in a clear, bass-y recording that’s
sure to pop a few old-skull doomhound boners. But, will the kids dig it?
Well, it might help to put this stuff in historical context, as the 6, 666
stoner rock bands in operation now were still in 6th grade when Vitus were
in operation, and besides Trouble and Pentagram, they were pretty much the
only doom machine in town back then. But really, rock n’ roll ain’t
supposed to be school, so who knows if the new breed of marijuana abusers
wanna hear an obscure live recording of their dad’s fave misery rock band.
Personally, if I had a kid, I’d fuckin’ MAKE him listen to it, because
that hippy bellbottom shit they’re listening to these days is a tawdry
joke in comparison to true electric funerals like “Dying Inside” or “War
Is Our Destiny”.
Umm, thank you. Doom on.
