Originally released in 1999, when doomsday was still tantalizingly close,
Apocalypse Damnare (clever!) is a forked tongue-in-cheek epic of
slug-crawl doomrawk, full of hiccupping death-on-downers vox, wavy sheets
of lo-fi distortion, and almost completely flat-lined metal riffs. To be
honest, this sounds an AWFUL LOT like a 45 slowed down to 33 RPM – or 16,
if you’ve got granny’s turntable. Does this sound like fun to you – an
hour’s worth of a narcoleptic cookie monster spewing his guts up at the
wrong speed? Cuz I don’t know, I feel like life’s too short for no-punchline
gags like this. But hey, maybe I’m just not doom enough to get it*.
Suffice to say, Rigor Sardonicus make Sleep sound wide-awake.
*I actually turned this off and put on a
Waterboys record halfway
through typing this just to break the mood, so it’s pretty much official.
