“No Such Soul” is the latest batch of arena rockers from
Ron Marks, the
former Celtic Frost guitarist who long ago gave up the frosty Swiss deathsludge for glammy sleaze metal. Marks still rides the rickety
ex-Frost train for PR purposes, but you’ll hear exactly none of Ye Olde
Morbid Tales in Subsonic. In fact, songs like “Dream American” and
“Delilah” are much closer to Canuck superrockers Danko Jones than
CF,
thanks to Marks’ tight, muscular riffs, the explosive flurry of notes on
his solos, and his phlegmy, funky vocal delivery. The only big difference,
really, is that Marks tosses in a dose of Southern slide guitar boogie here
and there. Oh, and his drummer really bangs the ass out of his kit, too –
perhaps he thinks this is still Celtic Frost.
My guess is that Marks is going for the hardcore “shredder” crowd with
this album, as evidenced by the constant walls-of-guitar, but it’s
definitely a rocker, and about a million miles away from what you’d expect
from a dude that used to hang out with grunt-king Tom Warrior.
Well, unless you count “Cold Lake”. But let’s not get mixed up in that
debacle again.
