THE ROXYDOLLS
Rock N’ Roll Queen

Sure, the Japanese may be extremely advanced in electronics, school girl fashions, and weirdo porn, but for whatever reason, when it comes to music, they seem to be permanently fixated on the sleaze, sass, and smiles that ruled the Sunset Strip during the decade of decadence and ran the glam streets of New York in the seventies. I mean, just ask Hardcore Superstar or the Sex Slaves – the Japanese kids go completely fucking nuts for some bona fide sleazy rock n’ roll in the new century. And now they’re picking up the sticks. Sure, it may be 20-30 years too late, but somehow they got their hands on leather jackets and feather boas and are acting under the strict belief that the Saturday night rock n’ roll party is just beginning.

The Roxydolls are a group of androgynous glam freaks, all decked out in unitards, polka dot shirts, paisley scarves, and pouty lips, with names like Chelsea, Ruby, Rodz, Dee, and Vicky (their Japanese names lend no hint to their actual sex), who play delicious sleaze pop songs in the vein of T. Rex, Aerosmith, and the New York Dolls. It’s a real punk rock mess, this one, with tons of squealing riffs, gutter bass lines, and sing along choruses. It’s kind of childlike at times, which definitely makes it endearing. Well, as endearing as kamikaze hell raising can be, I suppose. The best part about Rock N’ Roll Queen is that Chelsea spits the lyrics out in Japanese, but somehow you can really understand that the doll is singing about pussy, partying, and cherry pie. You know, 20 years ago in America or right now in Japan, it’s all the same. The party never ends, my friends.
