There’s nothing particularly remarkable about the music on
Bring It On,
the sophomore CD from psychobilly slicksters the HorrorPops – it’s the
same hepped-up pop-rock tricked out with a stand-up bass and skyhigh
flattops to make us believe it’s monster-movie-lovin’ roots trash – but
you know, the band certainly sells it like there’s something behind its
recycled SoCal beachpunk riffs besides lots of hairspray and expensive
tattoos. I disliked the shit out of their debut CD, but I appreciate the
sugar rush stomp that drives Bring It On, especially “Freaks in Uniforms”
and “Undefeated.” That doesn’t mean I’m gonna start making copies
for my friends, but it’s nice to hear something aimed directly at the
heart of Teenage America that encourages them to act like the lust-crazed
hooligans they really are, and not sensitive emo drips.
