 Doomriders
is a local (to me)
semi-supergroup that includes members of modern hardcore kingpins Converge
and Cast Iron Hike in it’s ranks. Their rather bitchin’ monster-mash
posters are plastered all over Boston, so I am assuming they’re packing
‘em in at the neighborhood dives and scoring all the sweet teen doom pussy
in town. Do they deserve it? Well, I dunno, you tell me: swirl together a
Halloween cocktail of sleazy Satanic speed-rock (think Hookers), chugging
Thin Lizzy riffs, twisty hardcore-metal bits, and barking tuff-guy vox,
and wash it all down with a sludge-y Sabbath chaser. If that sounds like
your kinda youthful indiscretion, then strap in for a wallop of
eviction-baiting anthems like “Listen Up” (lyrics, in their entirety: “Get
off my fucking back!”) and “Fuck This Shit” (“Fuck my landlord, fuck my
boss, fuck my teachers, fuck the cops!”). There’s at least one classic cut
here, “Midnight Eye”, a very Danziggy slice of demon-slither, and there’s
lots of impressive two-guitar harmonies laced throughout the proceedings,
but for the most part, the Doomriders would rather just punch screaming
holes through your tortured ears than bother with any sort of arena rock
circus tricks.
