SHEAVY
Republic?
Candlelight USA

It’s been a long time coming, but after three years of silence, the mighty Sheavy have returned from the hinterlands of Newfoundland with a megadose of their patented sweet leaf dope n’ roll to soothe the Sabbath-deprived masses. The band is far-flung these days, and don’t always have the opportunity to write and play together, so this ‘un actually comes as a pleasant and welcome surprise.

Seems a little redundant to rehash (ha!) the Sheavy sound, but it HAS been a while, so I guess I oughta mention that Sheavy’s lead howler, Steve Hennessey, sounds more like Sabotage-era Ozzy then even that Witchfinder General dude. This indisputable fact has always been the band’s biggest blessing/curse, but it should be noted that Sheavy (rhymes with heavy, natch) aren’t nearly as constrained as the syrup-mongering shadow they dwell in; where Sabbath lumber and boom, Sheavy flow freely on waves of cosmic booze-blooze that sound as authentically 70’s as a vintage copy of Slow Death Funnies. This latest album, “Republic?” doesn’t have anything as soul-frying as that one 9 minute jam about the dead porn star they did a few years back, but it’s got plenty of epic power-fuzz and spacey trucker metal to keep you in a sweetly narcotic haze for hours. A worthy chapter in the ongoing saga of Canada’s favorite blastronauts. ________________________________________________________
