Something
happened to Munich’s
favorite sons The Lucky Punch between here and their last record, and I
think that something might be maturity. When I reviewed their previous
disc, “Kicked Up a Hullaballoo”, I wrote that “the riffs fly at you like
Chinese stars in a Sonny Chiba movie”, and there ain’t no shit like that
happening here. Which is not to say that “Join Our Cruise” doesn’t have
it’s own charms, because it certainly does, from the harmonica driven slow
blues of “Still Howlin’” to the jangly, Dinosaur Jr-esque alterna-rock of
opener “Trapped”, to the breezy, 70’s roots-rocker “Lonesome”. Elsewhere
they tackle Blaxploitation-lite, ala Big Chief (“Wake Up Knock),
Hellacopters-style retro-psyche (“Bad Boy”), and even some Lizzy
thunderboogie (bonus track “Playing My Music”). So, lotsa new sounds to
chew on here, all of it played with loose, confident flair. I miss the
hard stuff, but it’s not like action rock is hard to find these days. If
yr in the mood for something a little classier than the usual greaseball
apocalypse, check this out. By the way, this particular copy is the
“China” edition. Buy two, and it comes with eggroll. __________________________________________________ |
