Although
Spain is infamous for it’s hordes of degenerate sleaze rockers, it’s rare
to find a Spanish rock n’ roll band that actually sings in English. The
lyrics on “Naughty Little Girls” could be more accurately be described as
Spanglish (“It’s true I’m a dope machine/Don’t talk to me I can’t
hear/Mind your own business/Don’t smell my ass”), but they’re close enough
for rock n’ roll. Smoking Bird is a slithery four-piece steeped in the
classic freak-rock tradition, with dollops of blooze and blustery 70’s
metal to keep things interesting. Their sound is unique enough to evade
any easy, sleazy comparisons, although you could definitely count AC/DC,
GN’R, Thin Lizzy. Allman Brothers, QOTSA, Rose Tattoo, and possibly Queen
as strong contenders for Smoking Bird’s favorite bands. Lots of charging,
acid-powered hard rock guitars, songs with titles like “Cool Ass” and
“Rock n’ Roll Balls”, a booklet slathered in lingerie-wrapped girl parts,
and a decidedly un-modern approach to power-boogie all makes for a hot
slab o’ Spanish rock. Smoking, even. __________________________________________________ |
