North Carolina ‘beach rats’
ASG lay down an impressive set of
super-heavy doper-groove here that brings to mind the galloping
instrumental slab-rock vistas of Karma to Burn and the loping stoner-buzz
of Queens and Open Hand. No wonder, really, seeing as the band originally
were an all-instro power-trio who found their niche throwing crazy shapes
under blazing summer suns on several Warped tour stints. Eventually they
found their voice in guitarist Jason Shi, who added vox when no suitable
frontman surfaced, and the result is a rock-solid throb that’s half heat
stroke, half narcotic euphoria, built on a bedrock of interlocking riffs
and headbanging rhythms. It’s not exactly psychedelic, but you can still
freak freely on this shit, especially during the cosmic “Thirsting for
More”, perhaps the first Sabbath/Husker Du hybrid on record, and the
flowing arena-rawk of the chugging title track. Imagine, um.... Sound
Manchu? Fu Garden? Either one is good. This is quite diggable, brother, so
dig it. ________________________________________________________
