Chris Laubis
is a New York-based
old-skull rocker who probably has a buncha stories that’d curl your toes.
I’m just guessing, but when Richie Scarlet from fuckin’ Mountain is
throwing some piano plinks on your album, it means you’ve been around and
back, Jack. But that’s for the bar, or the courtroom. What Laubis offers
up here is a collection of semi-acoustic glam rockers, in the vein of T
Rex and Donovan (“Hurdy Gurdy Man” and “20th Century Boy” are, indeed,
both on deck), peppered with a few blooze-brawlers that sound like a,
well, wyrd cross between Tesla and Spiders N’ Snakes. What stands out on
this ‘un though is the uniformly solid songwriting – dig the wistful,
scary-pretty opener “God is My Girlfriend”, the spooky glitter-folk of
“Bones”, or the brooding, spacey “Movin’ On”, for three decidedly unique
sounding songs that hang in the air like a warm, pleasant mist before
disappearing into the darkening tree-line somewhere. Weird it is, but
charming, too. Sorta like you, on a good day. ________________________________________________________
