DC
mouthman Jake Starr - Adam West himself, in spirit, if not cape and
bat-phone- is an indefatigable freedom-fighter in the war against
everything Not-Rock. Nothing else matters to this cat, and his utter
conviction to the wicked power chord and the indecent hip-shake has not
wavered a bit in the decade long history of Adam West. Band members come
and go, Jake keeps rocking. The sound of punk rockers on motorcycles
buzzing through Sin City loses favor with the public at large, Jake keeps
rockin. Iggy Pop makes art loft noise records and Aerosmith retires to
puffball power ballads, Jake keeps rocking. Thanks Christ for Jake Starr.
"Ready Steady" collects 'rare', (i.e. singles and comps) Adam
West tracks from 1993 to 1999, and serves 'em all up on one meaty platter.
The beauty of the AW sound is that it slips and slides into every seedy
sub-genre you can throw around. Acid-fried Super Soul? Got it, baby, check
out "Upside Down", which fairly aches with pre-flannel Seattle
lizard-groove. 60's stoner-garage fuzz attacks? Dig the Blue Cheer/Cream
freak-in of "Vanilla". Creepy psycho speed punk? They got a
Misfits medley on here, tossing "Halloween" and "She"
together like black salad. Detroit murder rawk? They do "Search and
Destroy", too. Absurdly titled sugar n' snarl powerpop? "Oscar
the Grouch". See what I'm saying? Adam West was there already, baby,
they have climbed that mountain and pissed off of it's peak. This
collection is a great way to get to know DC's finest sons real nice-like,
without having to be some pussy record collector jerk to do it. Dig in.
